Department of Dental Laboratory Technology, University of Tehran
The Department of Dental Laboratory Technology at the University of Tehran was established in 1966. For many years, the Dental Laboratory Technology program admitted students at the associate (two-year) level. Since 2009, the program has been offered as a bachelor’s degree (four-year) in both continuous and non-continuous formats.
Definition
The Bachelor’s program in Dental Laboratory Technology is a branch of dental sciences focused on the fabrication and restoration of various dental and maxillofacial prostheses. This includes complete and partial removable dentures, fixed prostheses, implant-supported restorations, maxillofacial prostheses, occlusal stents, digital dental technologies and navigation systems, as well as orthodontic appliances and related prosthetic devices.
Main educational subjects include:
a) Complete removable dentures
b) Removable partial dentures
c) Fixed partial dentures and crowns
d) Ceramic and composite laminates and veneers for aesthetic and functional restoration
e) Various orthodontic appliances for treatment and protection of teeth
f) Maxillofacial prostheses replacing missing jaw and facial structures
g) Proficiency in digital dental technologies (CAD/CAM, navigation, smile design)
h) Fabrication of various surgical guides (implant and orthognathic)
To achieve these competencies, students must become familiar with a wide range of materials, including different types of waxes, plastics and polymers, dental alloys (precious and non-precious), metals, steels, dental porcelains, and composites.
In addition, sufficient knowledge of mechanical instruments, grinding and polishing tools, and various wheels is essential. Familiarity with equipment such as casting and porcelain furnaces, scanners, milling machines, and CAD/CAM software is also required. Through the proper use of these tools and technologies, graduates can restore both aesthetics and function, thereby improving patients’ comfort, hygiene, and overall health.
