History of Tehran University of Medical Sciences
The first modern center of medical training in Iran was founded in 1851. It was a part of the Institute of Higher Education (Dar-Ol-Fonoon). When Dar-Ol-Fonoon was founded in 1894, dentistry was taught as a sub-branch of medicine at the same school. When university of Tehran was established in 1934, dentistry was separated as an independent school. In 1985, medical schools and departments associated with medical fields were separated from the Ministry of Higher Education and were administered by the Ministry of Higher Education. Since 1986, all those schools affiliated with university of Tehran in medical fields have carried on their activities independently under the title of “Tehran University of Medical Sciences and Health Services” (TUMS). TUMS is the oldest and most well-known medical center in Iran, both nationally and internationally. According to the recent Shanghai ranking, TUMS School of Dentistry is placed in the range of 301-400 in the world and has the first position among dental schools in the country.
School of Dentistry started its independent education with enrollment of 20 students who studied in clinics of Oral Diseases and Diagnosis, Oral Surgery, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Implantology and Restorative Dentistry). This was followed by the establishment of other departments. The School of Dentistry was located on the main campus of Tehran University till 2009, and then, it moved to its new independent campus with 260 dental units. Moreover, a new separate campus was established in 2011 for international undergraduate students with 120 dental units. The school has 13 main departments (Community Oral Health; Dental Biomaterials; Endodontics; Restorative Dentistry; Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology; Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology; Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine; Orthodontics; Pediatric Dentistry; Periodontics; Prosthodontics and Dental Laboratory Technology Department) as well as relevant clinics and wards in hospitals affiliated with TUMS.
