Program Description:

Considering the ever-increasing rate of progress in various sciences, especially in the dental field, which is younger than other medical fields, it seems it is absolutely necessary to revise the educational curricula in these fields. Such revisions were deemed necessary considering: 1) changes in the needs of community members and dental specialists; 2) changes and innovations in the field of prevention and provision of oral health services and also the results of evaluations and determination of real needs as reported by recent graduates and post-graduate students of pediatric dentistry. On the other hand, the guidelines of pediatric dentistry prepared by the Supreme Committee of this field have made it mandatory to revise the curriculum of pediatric dentistry. Therefore, the present revised curriculum was prepared.  

Definition 

Pediatric dentistry is one of the specialty courses in dentistry, which aims to prevent, preserve and promote health, and diagnose and treat orodental diseases in healthy children and adolescents and in individuals with special needs. The educational materials in this specialty field consist of the materials taught during the general dental course but at a higher and more extensive learning level. Graduates passing the specially exams held by the authorities of the Ministry of Health, Treatment and Medical Education will be certified as pediatric dentistry specialists.

 

Objectives:

 

The Objectives of the new curriculum is to train pediatric dentistry specialists who have achieved the global and national standards of knowledge levels, academic and clinical skills, beliefs and professional behaviors. In addition, the graduates are expected to offer high-quality preventive and diagnostic services and also offer educational and research services.

At the end of the program learners will be competent in the following skills:

  • Complete examination and designing a comprehensive treatment plan
  • Controlling children's behavior
  • Detecting oral cavity’s acquired and evolutionary anomalies and disorders
  • Applying dental caries preventive methods
  • Children’s milk and permanent teeth treatment
  • Applying fissure sealant and preventive resinous treatment
  • Children’s milk and permanent teeth pulp treatment
  • Management and treatment of impact seen teeth
  • Dental Hospital services
  • Dentistry for disabled children and adolescents
  • Managing and supervising occlusion in children and adolescents
