Educational activities
The activities of this group are mainly divided into faculty and hospital parts. Currently in the hospital part, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery wards and operating room at Shariati hospital, Sina hospital, Children's Medical Center and the Cancer Institute are active. In Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department in dental school, all out-patient oral surgeries and in the hospitals, all Surgeries in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery, including trauma, pathology, esthetic and reconstruction, are conducted by faculty members.
Dentistry students have 3 theoretical units (special for surgical department), 6.5 theoretical units (integrated units), 7 practical units (special for surgical department) and 4.5 practical units (integrated units) in this department.
In addition, students should attend a multidisciplinary integrated clinical course over two semesters in their senior year, in which they are given patients and are responsible for all dental treatments required for each patient. This course is held in a separate multidisciplinary clinic with attending staff from Restorative dentistry, Endodontics, Periodontics and Prosthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Community Oral Health Departments.
Another horizontal integrated multidisciplinary clinical course is diagnosis and treatment of TMDs which is held in Prosthodontics department with the collaboration of the faculty members from Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine and this Department.
The duration of the post-graduate training program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is 5 years.
Research activities
The faculty members of this group are active in guiding research thesis. So far, 78 research projects have been conducted at the Center for Maxillofacial Surgery, operated by the Department of oral and maxillofacial Surgery.
Some of the research fields of oral and maxillofacial surgery department include:
- Navigation application in Maxillofacial Surgery
- Application of 3D virtual modeling & 3D printing in Implantology and Maxillofacial Surgery
- Stem Cell Application in Implantology and Maxillofacial Surgery
- Application of virtual planning in free flaps
- A joint research project with Tarbiat Modarres University on the genome of cancer cells and its impact on prognosis of cancer patients
- Application of surgical cutting guides in pathologic lesions and orthognathic surgery and maxillofacial reconstruction
- Publication of the journal of craniomaxillofacial research
- The construction of a surgeon robot with the help of the University of Amir Kabir
- In-vitro preparation of Rh-BMP2
- The establishment of the Advanced Center of Maxillofacial Surgeries including navigation, 3D printing, computer-assissted surgery
- Conducting the Tissue Engineering Research Line and implementing significant number of research projects in this field
- Shariati Hospital Registration as AO Fellowship Center
- Contracting with the Newborn Health Department of the Ministry of Health regarding patients with palate cleft
- Implementation of 78 research projects in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Research Center
Treatment activities
In the department of the faculty, all out-patient oral surgeries and in the hospital, all in-patient maxillofacial surgeries, including trauma, pathology, esthetic and reconstruction, are conducted by faculty members.
They also provide special services to patients, that are rarely admitted in other centers including:
- Distraction osteogenesis
- Microvascular surgery
- Cancer surgeries
- Craniofacial reconstructions
Launching four fields of the fellowship, approved by Ministry of Health includes:
- Esthetic oral and Maxillofacial Surgeries
- Maxillofacial Trauma Surgery
- Oral and Maxillofacial Oncology
- Craniofacial Pediatric Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeries
In addition, members of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery group are active in the four hospitals of Shariati, Sina, the Children's Medical Center and the Cancer Institute.
