History of Prosthodontics Department in Tehran University of Medical Sciences

Prosthodontics is the science of replacing lost teeth and oral tissues, restoring severely damaged teeth and oral rehabilitation with biocompatible materials. The first workshops for “making denture prostheses” dates back to before the establishment of Dar al-Fonoon institute of higher education in 1851.  First dental school named “School of denture making” was founded as a branch of Medical School by Dr. Melczarski, Dr. Stump, Dr. Stepanian and Dr. Sayyah in 1918.

When construction of the Faculty of Medicine completed in 1937, “School of denture making” as a part of Medical School moved to the Tehran University Campus and its name changed to “School of Dentistry”. At that time School of Dentistry had a Prosthodontics Department with three wards: fixed, partial and complete removable prosthetics. In 1956, Faculty of Dentistry separated from faculty of Medicine and new departments including department of fixed prosthodontics were formed. In 2010, after the Dental School moved to new building, two departments merged and made “Department of Prosthodontics”.

Patients receive different prosthetic services in this department, like crowns and bridges, partial and complete removable dentures, maxillofacial prosthetics, implant supported fixed and removable prostheses, occlusion and TMD treatments.
