Department of Periodontics
The Periodontics Department at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) was established in 1956 within the School of Dentistry. In its early years, the Periodontics and Oral Medicine departments operated as a combined unit under the leadership of Dr. Sayyah. In 1966, the Faculty of Dentistry was reorganized into five separate departments, with the Periodontics Department officially beginning its independent mission under the supervision of Dr. Khoii. The department soon introduced periodontics courses for undergraduate dental students and began admitting postgraduate residents in 1976.
The Periodontics Department specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting the supporting structures of teeth, including the gums, alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, and cementum. Common conditions treated include gingivitis, periodontitis, gum recession, and dental implants, as well as cosmetic periodontal procedures. The department is equipped to perform advanced procedures such as scaling and root planing, gum grafting, crown lengthening, and pocket reduction surgery, often in collaboration with other dental specialties to provide comprehensive care.
