Educational activities

The Periodontics Department has developed curricula to meet the educational demands of two groups of applicants: undergraduate students and postgraduate residents.

The undergraduate students are assigned to pass three theoretical courses, scheduled in the seventh, ninth, and tenth semesters as well as four practical courses in the eighth, ninth, tenth and eleventh semesters. The curriculum for the specialized courses is planned in six semesters and lasts for minimum three years.

The undergraduate students also attend a multidisciplinary integrated clinical course over two semesters in their senior year. Accordingly, they are required to manage medical patients and are responsible for all dental treatments. This course is held in a separate multidisciplinary clinic with attendants from the Restorative Dentistry, Endodontics, Periodontics and Prosthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Community Oral Health Departments.

 

Research activities

Below is a list of research activities to improve the research skills of faculty members, residents, and students:

  • Weekly journal clubs
  • Training courses on writing articles and research methodology
  • Adjustment, registration and implementation of research projects in line with the research priorities of the Department
  • Preparation of scientific articles and its publication in reputable national and international journals
  • Design and implementation theses for undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Participation in both local and overseas international congresses
  • Hosting international congresses
  • Collaboration with other faculty departments and other research centers
  • Design and implementation of research projects with Implant Research Center
  • Research activities in education to improve educational status
  • Active participation in the Journal of Dentistry of Tehran University of Medical Sciences

Treatment activities

The Periodontics Department provides health care procedures by both under graduate students and post graduate residents under direct supervision of the faculty members in the following sub-groups:

  • Oral hygiene instruction
  • Scaling and root planning (non-surgical treatments)
  • Consultation between departments regarding prognosis of tooth and dentition
  • Resective periodontal surgery
  • Periodontal and peri-implant plastic and esthetic surgery
  • Periodontal reconstructive surgery
  • Basic implant surgical procedures
  • Advanced implant surgical procedures
