Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) has deep historical roots in Iran’s dental education. In 1929, the foundation of the dental school began with part of Massoudieh's mansion and later Sa’d al-Dawlah's mansion. As the field advanced, the need for expanded facilities led to the move to Dr. Motamed Garden, where the dental school continued to grow. By 1937, the school officially relocated to Tehran University, marking a significant step in the development of oral and maxillofacial surgery education.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a vital specialty of dentistry, focusing on the diagnosis and surgical treatment of disorders, injuries, and defects in both the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial regions. Surgeons in this field are trained to perform both minor and major surgeries on the head, face, and neck under local and general anesthesia.
